Classic Solo: Whole Lotta Love

Artist: Led Zeppelin | Album: Led Zeppelin II | Guitarist: Jimmy Page | Year: 1969

This solo features some signature Jimmy Page licks including extreme bends and fast pentatonic licks. It’s essentially six licks that respond to the E chord in the backing so I’ve listed them all separately. In keeping with Jimmy’s tendency to mix things up live this is not meant to be a note for note copy of the recorded album track but a showcase for his commonly used licks.

The majority of the  solo uses the E pentatonic minor and E blues scales but it does sometimes dabble with the E pentatonic major scale.

Classic Riffs: Jimmy Page

Difficulty: Medium | Guitar used: Fender Telecaster | Tuning: Standard

Here is a selection of classic Jimmy Page riffs from the Led Zeppelin albums II and IV.  The influence of these riffs cannot be denied as so many rock and metal songs owe a debt to Jimmy Page.

Ideally these should be played on a Gibson Les Paul with plenty of overdrive through a Marshall stack, which I don’t have :(.. My examples should convey the general idea though! All the examples are in standard tuning. I hope you have fun learning these essential riffs and I’ll be coming back to Jimmy Page in the future, looking into his lead playing.

Example 1: Whole lotta Love
