Playing Lead Guitar: Part 1

Difficulty: Easy | Guitar used: Fender Telecaster | Tuning: Standard

This is the first in a series of articles looking into building a guitar solo or lead guitar line for a simple blues/rock progression.

Blues/rock backing track

Section 1:

Section 2:

|-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-|-5-5-5-5-----7v--|

I’ll be using this backing track for all the future articles but exploring different ways of playing lead guitar over it. The backing track consists of: section 1 x 5 > section 2 x 1 > section 1 x 4. It’s in 4/4 time with 90bpm.

The first lead idea is this simple octave riff. Mute the 4th string with your first finger as you hold down the octaves. In part 2 I’ll explore some basic scale theory and start to build a guitar solo.
