Classic Track: Hallelujah

Album: Grace | Artist: Jeff Buckley | Guitarist: Jeff Buckley | Year: 1994
I’m going to take you through Jeff Buckley’s beautiful version of the Leonard Cohen classic, Hallelujah. The song is in standard tuning with a capo placed at the fifth fret- although my tab assumes no capo is used. Use finger picking throughout and try and make every note ring out. Although fairly simple it’s all about varying the dynamics- some notes should be played quieter than others.

As one of my favourite singers, guitarists and songwriters I’ll be coming back to Jeff in the future.

The into shouldn't cause too many difficulties just take it slow and make sure all the notes are left to ring out.

If you've managed to get the into down then the rest of the song should cause few issues.

Chorus

 C Em
|----------0-------|----------0-------|----------------------|
|-1----------------|----------------3-|-0--------0-----------|

|-3----------------|-3----------------|----------------------|
|------------------|------------------|-0--------------------|

                  C G/B D/A
|----------------|----------------|----------------|-------3----|-------2h3|

|----------------|3-------3-------|3-------3-------|0-------3--2|-0--------|
|0---------------|----------------|----------------|------------|----------|
The verse/chorus is repeated then the song goes to the bridge:

Bridge

 Cadd9 Dadd11/E
|----------3-----3-|------------------|----------2-----2-|--------0---0----|
|----------3-----3-|------------------|----------3-----3-|--------3---3----|

|----2--------2----|----2-------------|----4--------4----|---4------4------|
|-3----------------|-3--------3--2--0-|------------------|-----------------|
|------------------|------------------|-0----------------|-0---------------|

 C G/B D/A
|---------------0-|----------------|-------3----------|-------2------------|
|---------1-----1-|---------1----1-|-------3----------|-------3--------3---|

|------2----------|------2---------|----0--------0----|----0---------------|
|-2h3--------3----|-2h3--------3---|-2--------2-------|-0--------0---------|
|-----------------|----------------|------------------|--------------------|
After getting used to the basic C/G progression, bar 3 of the bridge makes a nice change. Also, pay attention to the hammer-ons in bar 5 and 6. After the bridge there's another round of verse/chorus and then things get even more interesting in the interlude:

Interlude

|-------0---3---5--5/7--5---3-----3-----3------3/5-5-----5--5-/-7---|
|----1--1---1-----------------3-----3-------5--5/7---7------7-/-8---|

|-------------------------------------------------------------------|

|---8-----8-----8-----8---8-/-10----10-------10-------10-------10---|
|-----9-----9-----9-----9-9-/-11-------11-------11-------11-------11|
|-------------------------------------------------------------------|
|-------------------------------------------------------------------|
|-------------------------------------------------------------------|

|---------------7----12---------8---------------10------------------|
|-----------8-----------------------8---------------10--------------|
|-11-/-9------------------------9---------------11------------------|
|-----------------------------------10-----------------12-----------|
|-------------------------------------------------------------------|
|-------------------------------------------------------------------|
The song then goes straight into the final verse, the only difference being you change the Em7 to an Em. I haven't included the outro as it's just Ad-lib arpeggios of C, Em and G.

I hope you will enjoy learning this classic track and I’ll be returning to Jeff in the future with the haunting So Real.
